PBIS Conference

On October 27-28, it was an honor to travel to Richmond Illinois with our HUSD Team to attend the National PBIS Leadership Forum. This two-day forum for school, state, district and regional Leadership Teams was designed to help increase the effectiveness of our PBIS implementation.

Studies have found that a positive school climate has a significant positive impact on academics.
As part of the School Climate and Transformation grant, schools across the Nation, including Jacob Wiens, are focused on positive school climate and supporting student behavior through the strategic teaching of social skills.

PBIS is a “framework” that emphasizes a process or approach, rather than a curriculum, intervention or practice. As a multi-tiered framework, it guides the implementation and sustainability of interventions that are evidence-based. These interventions meet the academic, behavior and socio-emotional needs of all students and help to improve the overall culture and climate here at Jacob Wiens.

More than 2,600 educators from around the world gathered at the Conference Center to develop and/or obtain training on a range of topics. I found the most interest in the topics on Bullying Prevention, Supporting Families using PBIS and Culturally Responsive Practices presentations. I learned so much from attending this Leadership Forum and I look forward to working with our site PBIS team to further implement positive interventions to support all of our students.

Here at Jacob Wiens, we are in year one of PBIS implementation. Our site team meets one time a month to develop and work on our Action Plan. Our team is comprised of our Administrators, our Counselor, a Teacher from each grade level, Classified Staff members and Parents. We currently have 2 parents on our PBIS Team. Stay tuned for our upcoming parent workshop on PBIS. At this workshop, you will learn all about PBIS and how to work collaboratively to build a bridge between you child’s school experience and home life. If you are interested in joining our team, please call the office and ask for Miriam our Parent Liaison and she will assist you.
