Dear Jacob Wiens' Families,
We are excited to embark on a new endeavor to positively influence and inspire the lives of our students here at Jacob Wiens. At Jacob Wiens it is our belief that all of our students have the ability to learn and each holds a bright future ahead of them that includes going to college. To this end, it is our goal to make attending college a reality for all of our students. We have begun our journey by developing a comprehensive plan to expose students to the sights and sounds of college. Some of the ways we are achieving this are:
College Wednesdays - Every Wednesday, all staff and students are invited to wear college or university attire. This may include t-shirts, sweatshirts, caps, scarves, socks, visors, whatever you have to promote college pride.
College Vocabulary by Grade Level - Teachers at every grade level introduce college vocabulary words to their students. By the end of 5th grade, students will have a healthy bank of college and university terms that they understand and can converse about.
University Banners/Flags - University banners drape the doors of every classrooms inviting conversations among students about different colleges and universities.
Guest Speakers - Community Members and Hemet Unified Staff Members are invited to come and speak to the students about their journeys to college. There are many different ways that people can go to college. Students can attend college on athletic scholarships, on academic scholarships, by joining the military, having a special talent or specialty of study. The sky is the limit.
College Door Decorations and Bulletin Boards - All of the grade levels and many individual classrooms have door decorations or bulletin boards dedicated to sharing information about colleges. Some of the boards are thought provoking, others are informative, and all of them are inspiring conversations about college.
As a graduate of UCLA, I will be forever grateful for the opportunities that my years as a Bruin brought into my life and the doors that my degree has opened up. I look forward to nurturing my Jaguar Cubs as they explore the endless possibilities that college will bring their way.
